Mercedes-AMG Project One Hybrid Hypercar Close To Production Deliveries To Begin In 2021

  • The Project One features F1-inspired engineering in its aerodynamics, suspension and engine.

  • It is powered by the same 1.6-litre turbocharged hybrid V6 engine that powers the F1 Mercedes cars.

  • In terms of power, the engine and electric motors combine to put out over 1000PS.

  • The hypercar is already sold out with deliveries for the 275 units set to begin in 2021.

Mercedes-AMG's upcoming hypercar, Project One, is close to production as seen in its latest reveal video. It features recently crowned seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, who was heavily involved in the development of the engine powering the Project One, taking it out for a spin.

The inspiration and engineering aspects of Mercedes' Formula One programme are not just restricted to the engine, but also visible in the aerodynamics of the hypercar. In the 'After Work' teaser, Mercedes-AMG shows off the active aerodynamics systems that will leave you in awe. The Project One gets an extendable two-stage rear wing and fins on the bonnet that open up to maximize downforce in race mode and increase grip and performance.

The fact that the hypercar features an F1 engine while still being road-legal is a very rare marvel from an engineering perspective. Sure, it will have some limiters in terms of engine speed and top speed, but this is the same engine that helped propel Lewis Hamilton to his 2015 world championship.

Coming to what this 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged hybrid engine is capable of, in the Project One, it works with up to four electric motors, two at the front axle and two at the rear. They provide a combined output of over 1000PS of pure grunt and redlines at 11,000rpm The hypercar will achieve a top speed higher than the 350kmph mark.

Unfortunately, all we can do is gawk at this hybrid beauty and marvel over it because the 275 units that are going to be produced have already sold out. Deliveries for the Mercedes-AMG Project One will begin in 2021. As for Mercedes' future in electrified cars, it will offer new models next year itself as part of AMG's E Performance label.
