Buying Used: (2017-2020) Maruti Suzuki S-Cross

If fuel efficiency, practicality and low running costs are high on your list, the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross is definitely worth considering. Also, with the S-Cross now a petrol only model – powered by a 105hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine – the used car route is now the only way to get your hands on a diesel example. And with prices for good, used examples hovering between Rs 7-9 lakh, it is an attractive proposition. However, there are some things to note before you go ahead and buy one.
The S-Cross was launched in 2015 and was the first model to be sold via the carmaker’s premium Nexa dealership chain. The Creta-rivalling crossover received a facelift in late 2017, which brought with it design changes and more features.
With the facelift, Maruti dropped the Fiat-sourced 120hp, 1.6-litre diesel engine that was on offer and retained only the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre diesel engine in the 90hp, 200Nm tune. However, it gained Maruti’s SHVS mild hybrid tech that uses an Integrated Starter Generator motor to provide a mild torque-assist to aid fuel efficiency. It also features a stop-start system and brake energy regeneration. The S-Cross 1.3 diesel has a fuel efficiency rating of 24kpl (ARAI).
In terms of features, the top-spec Alpha variant gets auto LED projector headlamps with LED DRLs, LED taillamps, 16-inch diamond-cut alloys, leatherette upholstery, a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, push-button start with keyless entry, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers and cruise control. Safety-wise, the S-Cross is equipped with two airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child-seat mounts and rear parking sensors. However, the S-Cross does miss out on a sunroof and curtain airbags, which can be had on some of its rivals.
On the inside, although there is a good amount of plastic used, it doesn’t feel cheap or low rent. The gloss black and satin aluminium-like trim in the centre console helps lift the cabin ambience and so does the leatherette upholstery on the Alpha variants. The seats in the front are broad and supportive, and the rear is spacious enough to seat three. The boot space, meanwhile, is rated at 375 litres.
When it was launched in October 2017, prices for the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross ranged from Rs 8.49 lakh for the base Sigma trim to Rs 11.29 lakh for the Alpha variant (ex-showroom, Delhi). It is a relatively new model and a Maruti on top of that, so getting a slightly used example for anywhere between Rs 7-9 lakh is decent value. However, it makes more sense to buy one for around Rs 8 lakh as the new S-Cross petrol range itself starts at Rs 8.40 lakh (ex-showroom). Also worth noting, the S-Cross on sale right now is the same generation as what was launched.
Maintaining the S-Cross is not a very expensive affair and being a Maruti Suzuki product, spare parts are affordable. What also helps is Maruti’s widespread service network throughout the country.
Buyer, beware…
Suspension Wear
While on a test drive, check if the car’s suspension is squeaking or crashing excessively over a bad patch of road. If it does, it’s most likely the bushings that need to be replaced. However, this is a relatively inexpensive fix.
Touchscreen
On higher variants, check if the 7-inch SmartPlay infotainment touchscreen is working properly. Some owners have reported issues of the screen lagging, the Android Auto not functioning and even difficulties pairing their phones to the system.
Also worth knowing
Make sure to check the condition of wear-and-tear parts such as the tyres and the brakes. Also, check the condition of the clutch and pressure plate as some owners tend to ride the clutch, leading it to wear out prematurely. Lastly, inspect the body panels for scratches or damage as they could be expensive to repair or replace.
How much to spend
Rs 7-9 lakh
Good used examples of the S-Cross can be found on the market for anywhere between Rs 7-9 lakh, depending on the mileage, model year and variant. You should ideally go for the top-spec Alpha model as it gets all the features. However, even the mid-spec Zeta trim is decently equipped. Haggling over the price may be difficult as the S-Cross’ depreciation is low and they have good resale value.
