The AX trim is the most bareboned in the Thar lineup, making it perfect for those interested in customising it with their choice of wheels, winch, off-road accessories and infotainment system. In fact, Mahindra itself is offering a such as additional body cladding, mud flaps, music systems and some bits from the LX trim. That said, the barebones nature is better for off-road thrills since you wouldn't want things inside to get messy.

What makes the AX trim further suited for adventure junkies are the steel wheels and taller profile tyres which are ideal for tackling hard terrain. The top-spec trim of the Thar is a more road-friendly variant, but it's still a capable off-roader even though you may have to be careful with the 18-inch alloy wheels. It gets all the bells and whistles such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice commands, steering-mounted controls, follow-me-home headlamps as well as ESP with roll-over mitigation and brake locking differential. If you're worried about the electronics being compromised in tough conditions, you should know the Thar has an IP54 rating.

If a manual isn't your cup of tea, this is the only trim in the Thar lineup to offer the 6-speed automatic. Basically, this trim is for the urban jungle. It comes as close as a Thar can to becoming the only car in your garage.

Both trims have a special appeal of their own. The AX trim is suited for those who prefer some off-road thrills and would like to customise the Thar accordingly. The LX, on the other hand, is preferable for the stock experience while still being almost equally capable off the road.
