Tata Nexon EV MG ZS EV Hyundai Kona Electric To Get Cheaper For Delhi Buyers Thanks To New Electric Vehicle Policy

  • Road tax and registration fees for EVs bought in the next three year will be waived off.

  • All-electric cars to get purchase incentives of up to Rs 1.50 lakh.

  • Benefits for setting up charging infrastructure also to be had.

The Delhi government has rolled out its new Electric Vehicle Policy 2020 with an aim to push EV adoption and even tackle the air pollution problem in the capital.

The Delhi EV policy will feature incentives like waiving of road tax and registration fees for all Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) during the next three years. There's also purchase incentives for EVs with car buyers eligible for benefits of Upto Rs 1.50 lakh. This is in addition to the tax incentive of up to Rs 2.5 lakh that was announced under FAME II last year. All EVs bought under this policy will bear a sticker for better identification while the green number plates are anyway mandatory for battery-powered vehicles. These benefits will only be applicable to the first 1,000 private EV buyers in the Delhi region.

The EV policy also includes methods to enhance EV infrastructure with the aim of having public chargers within a 3km range from any given point within the capital. These will be important as the government also plans to register at least 25 percent electric vehicles in the city by 2024. That said, the specified percentage includes both two-wheelers and four-wheelers for private and commercial usage.

A scrapping incentive has also been introduced in which certain concessions will be provided if you're selling a conventional vehicle for an electric vehicle. The specific amount is yet to be revealed.

Further incentives have also been introduced for charging infrastructure as the Delhi government will offer Rs. 6000 off on a charging station for the first 30,000 charging points at existing homes or offices. Currently, the law mandates newly built workplace and co-operative buildings to allocate 20 percent of their parking for EVs with conduits for charging infrastructure.

Will this EV policy generate the mic required push needed to improve the EV adoption rate in Delhi? Only time will tell, as this policy will be active for a duration of 3 years.
