WRC To Resume 2020 Season On September 4

The 2020 WRC season will resume on the weekend of September 4-6 after the season had to be halted following three rounds due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

Three rounds were able to be completed before the spread of COVID-19 brought all motorsport activities to a halt. With the number of cases of the deadly disease slowly decreasing in Europe, which was first hit after China, the FIA has decided to push ahead with completing its season.

The originally planned 13 round season will now be reduced to eight and will conclude with Rally Japan on November 19-22.

Necessary precautions to ensure social distancing and reducing the chances of the spread of the virus will be taken as is the case with F1, which restarts its season this weekend.

After the completion of the first three rounds - Rally Monte Carlo, Rally Sweden and Rally Mexico - Toyota's Sebastien Ogier was leading the drivers' championship by eight points from teammate Elfyn Evans.

Toyota was leading the manufacturers' championship with 110 points over Hyundai, which had managed to score 89 points.

The dates for the remaining five rounds are as follows:

  • Rally Estonia: September 4-6

  • Rally Turkey: September 24-27

  • Rallye Deutschland: October 15-18

  • Rally Italia Sardegna: October 29-November 1

  • Rally Japan: November 19-22
