Top 5 bestselling motorcycles between Rs 1-1.5 lakh in FY2020

Over the last couple of weeks, we published a list of the top five highest-selling motorcycles priced above Rs 2 lakh and a list of the most popular ones between Rs 1.5-2 lakh. As we go lower on the price index, the average sales numbers increase dramatically, resulting in some interesting data. For this week, we decided to compile a list of the highest-selling motorcycles priced between Rs 1-1.5 lakh and following this will be the last of the series – highest sellers priced under the Rs 1 lakh.

Note: SIAM sales data indicates wholesale figures, which are the number of units sent from the manufacturer to the dealerships and not the number of units retailed. Also, certain manufacturers like Classic Legends (Jawa), BMW and Ducati do not share their numbers with SIAM, and since this list is based on its data, the mentioned bike makers have not been considered.

Apache RTR series (160, 180, 160 4V, 200 4V) – 3,65,232 units

Price - Rs 95,000 onwards*

Unfortunately, the data doesn’t reveal how many individual units of each Apache RTR model were delivered, so we’re forced to consider the series as a whole. We’ve also considered the fact that the Apache RTR 160, at Rs 95,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi), falls right under the minimum price criteria for this list. However, it costs more than Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom) in certain other cities and doesn’t contribute as substantially as the other three models to the total sales figure, and so we’ve added it to the lot.

The Apache series sold an impressive total of 3,65,232 units in FY2020. And despite a 21.5 percent decrease from the 4,65,322 units sold in FY2019, it managed to hold onto the final spot in the list of top 10 highest-selling models of the financial year. 

Back in December 2019, the Apache RTR 160 4V and RTR 200 4V were launched in their BS6-compliant iterations, and equipped with more than just a cleaner engine. Sales numbers are falling across the automotive industry, but the new Apaches may help turn the tide in its favour and allow it to hold onto the top spot over the next year as well.

Yamaha FZ, FZ-S V3.0 – 1,77,621 units

Price – Rs 99,200 lakh onwards*

The Yamaha FZ V3.0 is in second place, but you could say it’s the highest-selling standalone model in the Rs 1-1.5 lakh price bracket. The price of the standard FZ (Rs 99,200) falls right under the 1 lakh mark in Delhi, but falls just above in other cities, and so, it’s made the cut. The FZ-S, meanwhile, carries an ex-showroom price tag of Rs 1.03 lakh in Delhi.

In FY2020, the FZ V3.0 sold 1,77,621 units – a 19 percent drop from the 2,19,774 units sold the previous financial year. On the flipside, export numbers went up considerably – by 50 percent – from 70,725 units in FY2019 to 1,06,736 units in FY2020.

Royal Enfield Bullet 350 – 1,30,820 units

Price - Rs 1.21 lakh onwards

Royal Enfield has released separate sales numbers for the Bullet 350 and the Bullet 350 ES, with the former selling 1,30,820 units in FY2020, landing it the third spot on this list. The Bullet 350 is also the model that’s seen the least drop in sales, compared to the previous year. To elaborate, the model sold 1,37,946 in FY 2019, which means this fiscal year has seen a mere 5 percent drop and that’s quite impressive, considering the substantial fall most of the market has experienced. The introduction of the lower priced 350 X model in August 2019 will have certainly helped here. 

Bajaj Pulsar 180F, 160NS, 200NS – 1,18,022 units

Price - Rs 1.03 lakh onwards

As with the TVS data,  all the Pulsar models in the 150cc to 200cc category are considered together. These include the Pulsar 180F, 160NS, 200NS and RS 200 that sold a combined total of 1,18,022 units in FY2020 – a 19.6 percent drop from the 1,46,940 units sold in FY2019. This, despite the addition of a new 180F to the Pulsar range, is an indication of how sales have suffered over the last year. A silver lining comes in the form of export numbers that have remained steady, with 1,20,282 units shipped this fiscal year, compared to an almost identical 1,20,741 export units in FY2019.

Bajaj Pulsar 220F – 74,309 units

Price - Rs 1.17 lakh onwards

Last on the list is another Bajaj Pulsar – the 220F. It is another model on the list that hasn’t received a substantial update in a long time but continues to be popular among the masses. However, sales did drop in comparison to FY2019 – down by 10 percent from the 82,511 units sold in FY2019. Exports, on the other hand, have gone up by a substantial 68 percent – up from 12,599 units in FY2019 to 21,284 units in FY2020.
